![]() When it comes to the principle of proximity, location plays an integral role in the way an image is perceived. The brain immediately creates an association when particular objects are grouped together. The human brain tends to believe that when different elements are placed close together, they form a particular image.įor example, when you pass by a schoolyard or even a school bus, and you see a group of students, you may think that they are classmates or, at the very least, schoolmates. ![]() There are many different ways to create this emphasis or focal point such as through lines, colors, shapes, textures, size, etc. The focal point principle states that whatever stands out visually will capture and hold the viewer’s attention first. What are the Gestalt principles, and how do companies and brands use them? First Principle: Focal Point They developed theories about how people perceive the images they see around them and coined the term Gestalt principles. The Gestalt Theory was the brainchild of a group of German psychologists back in the 1920s. Logo designers often utilize the Gestalt Theory in the logos creation process. However, most people don't realize the amount of time designers and artists dedicate to the process of conceptualizing a logo. This similarly indicates to users that the elements have the same function – in this case, linking to profiles of users. For the past few years, leading brands and companies have been redesigning their logos for a much-needed upgrade. ![]() For example, if you’re including avatars or images of users in the design of your app, you’ll want to make sure that the placeholders for those avatars are the same shape and size in your wireframes. To help users navigate your app quickly, you want to keep “like with like” for consistency. Simiplity is key when it comes to your wireframes. So, how do you apply these Gestalt Principles to your own work? Check out an exmple of each of these three Gestalt Principles in actual wireframes. Common region means that elements located within the same closed area are perceived to be grouped together.Proximity means that elements that are close together appear to be more related than things that are spaced farther apart.Similarity means that elements that look alike (in shape, size, or color, for instance) are perceived to have the same function. The three Gestalt Principles: similarity, proximity, and common region. ![]() ![]() In the wireframes you’re creating, you can apply Gestalt Principles to organize content so it is visually pleasing and easier to understand. These principles guide how humans view the designs around them in everyday life. Gestalt Principles describe how humans group similar elements, recognize patterns, and simplify complex images when we perceive objects. The human brain makes sense of the world around it by building logic, patterns, and structure. What is their goal? How will you meet that need with your design? How will the user react? Think about what the user wants to do when they visit your app or website. Your designs will give users solid solutions to problems they experience. Although a user’s reaction to a design might be subjective, the design itself isn’t. The design of an app or website is subjective and open to a user’s personal interpretations, thoughts, or feelings. ![]()
